Vietnam’s imports of machinery, equipment, tools, and instruments fell to US$5.36 billion in August, down 2.53 percent from July, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year-to-date imports reached US$38.87 billion.
China remained the dominant supplier with US$3.48 billion, though down 3.81 percent, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total.
Japan followed with US$400 million, down 2.67 percent, while South Korea supplied US$361 million, down 14.13 percent.
Germany ranked fourth at US$132 million, down 9.47 percent.
Taiwan shipments rose 4.47 percent to US$130 million. T
he US increased 7.41 percent to US$126 million, while Thailand and Malaysia each contributed under 2 percent of imports.
Smaller suppliers such as India, Italy, Singapore, and Switzerland recorded mixed trends.
Volatility was evident among minor sources.
Poland and Austria both grew by over 35 percent, while Hong Kong plunged 76.23 percent.
Several European suppliers such as Italy, France, and Spain posted declines, while Canada fell 35.24 percent.
Imports from New Zealand more than doubled, albeit from a small base.
The figures confirm Vietnam’s dependence on China, Japan, and South Korea for machinery inputs, while the US and European suppliers contribute at the margins.
Smaller partners remain volatile, reflecting project-based or one-off transactions.
