Vietnam’s coal production reached 3.58 million tons in August 2025, down from 3.62 million tons in July, according to the latest data from Vietnam’s National Office of Statistics.
Output in August rose 5.7 percent year-on-year.
Over the first eight months of 2025, coal production totalled 31.59 million tons, a 3.9 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
This steady rise highlights Vietnam’s continuing reliance on coal to support its energy needs, despite growing commitments to renewables.
The data indicates a moderate upward trend, with production gains helping to stabilise domestic energy supply.
However, reliance on coal raises concerns over long-term sustainability and environmental commitments under Vietnam’s power development plans.
Coal remains a backbone of Vietnam’s energy sector, feeding both power generation and industrial demand.
While renewable investment is expanding, coal production growth underscores the difficulty of shifting away from fossil fuels in the near term.
