Vietnam imported US$169.52 million of ferrous waste and scrap in August, up 2.95 percent from US$164.65 million in July, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year-to-date imports stood at US$1.31 billion.
The monthly increase was driven largely by Japan, Vietnam’s dominant supplier, which shipped US$84.90 million in August, up nearly 13 percent.
Imports from the USA also climbed almost 38 percent to US$34.56 million.
Smaller gains came from Singapore, while flows from Hong Kong and Australia fell.
Japan accounted for more than half of total imports in the first eight months of 2025, while the USA contributed just over 12 percent.
Other notable sources included Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore, though their shipments remained volatile month to month.
Ferrous scrap is critical to Vietnam’s steel sector, which relies heavily on imports to feed electric arc furnaces.
