Vietnamese equities ended Monday’s session in negative territory, with the benchmark VN-INDEX falling 1.46 percent as broad-based selling pressure weighed on most sectors and foreign investors maintained their net selling streak, according to the latest data from the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange → view source.
Market overview
The VN-INDEX closed at 1,634.45 points, declining 24.17 points from the previous session.
The blue-chip VN30 index performed worse, dropping 2.15 percent to 1,819.60 points, while the broader VN-ALLSHARE index fell 1.81 percent to 1,770.13 points.
Technology stocks bore the brunt of selling pressure, with the VNIT index plummeting 3.19 percent to 4,666.70 points, marking it as the worst-performing sector of the day.
Materials (VNMAT) and real estate (VNREAL) also faced significant headwinds, declining 2.41 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
The healthcare sector (VNHEAL) provided the only bright spot, limiting losses to just 0.57 percent.
Trading activity surges
Market activity remained robust despite the negative sentiment, with 1.27 billion shares changing hands worth 35.98 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately US$1.37 billion).
Saigon-Hanoi Bank (SHB) led trading volumes with 87.8 million shares traded, followed by Hoa Phat Group (HPG) at 66.4 million shares and Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank (VPB) with 55.3 million shares.
Winners and losers
Despite the overall market decline, several stocks managed to post strong gains.
Vinacafe Bien Hoa (VCF), Song Da Railway Construction (SRC), and Dong Thap Telecommunications (DTL) all surged 6.98 percent, leading the gainers’ list.
On the losing side, Nha Ngoi Commune Construction (NNC) suffered the steepest decline at 6.99 percent, while DTT Corporation and L10 Group fell 6.98 percent and 6.92 percent, respectively.
Foreign selling pressure intensifies
Foreign investors were net sellers during the session, with total purchases of 107.2 million shares valued at 3.37 trillion dong (US$128.6 million) compared to sales of 137.7 million shares worth 5.11 trillion dong (US$195.0 million).
This resulted in a net selling position of 30.4 million shares valued at 1.73 trillion dong (US$66 million).
Market Outlook
The continued foreign selling pressure and broad-based declines across most sectors suggest investor caution heading into the week.
