Latin America Crop Protection Chemicals Market Trends

The Growing Dominance of Pulses and Oilseeds Segment

Latin America has rich agricultural resources and favorable climatic conditions that support the cultivation of soybeans, beans, lentils, and other key pulse and oilseed crops. In 2023, soybean exports from Latin America reached a record high of approximately USD 58.2 billion, increasing from USD 45.2 billion in 2021, according to ITC Trade Map. This robust export activity in the oilseed sector and growing pulse production have created significant demand for crop protection chemicals to ensure high yields and quality produce.

Latin America produced 4.8 million metric tons of pulses in 2024. This scale of production requires extensive use of crop protection chemicals, with the sector consuming a significant portion of all agrochemicals used in the region. The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation reports that pulses farmers invest 25-30% of their annual production costs in crop protection, making it a major contributor to agrochemical demand.

The tropical and subtropical climate of Latin America provides favorable conditions for agricultural production but simultaneously increases pest and disease challenges. According to the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, pulse and oilseed crops in the region are affected by more than 200 species of pests and pathogens, resulting in yield losses of 30-40% when chemical protection is inadequate. This agricultural challenge has necessitated structured crop protection strategies, with farmers implementing 4-6 applications of fungicides and insecticides during each growing season.

Brazil Dominates the South American Market

Brazil is one of the largest agricultural producers globally, cultivating an estimated 95.1 million hectares of land for crops like soybeans, corn, sugarcane, and others, according to FAO 2023. Soybeans, Brazil's primary crop, accounted for over 152.1 million metric tons of production in 2023, establishing the country as the world's largest soybean producer and exporter. To protect this vast production, the country relies heavily on crop protection chemicals. Soybean growers combat pests like the Helicoverpa caterpillar and diseases like Asian soybean rust, which cause losses of USD 1 billion annually. Consequently, Brazil's consumption of crop protection chemicals ranks highest in Latin America, according to IBGE data.

Glyphosate dominates crop protection product sales in Brazil, with primary applications in soy, corn, wheat, cotton, and coffee cultivation. According to a survey by the G1 agency released by the Brazilian Association of Post-Patent Defensives, glyphosate leads the list of most commercialized agrochemicals in the country. The herbicide 2,4-D ranks as the second-best-selling crop protection product in Brazil in 2023. It offers an alternative mode of action to glyphosate, targeting specific weed groups, and has gained prominence in managing glyphosate-resistant weeds.

The fungicide mancozeb holds the third position in sales volume in Brazil. Despite being the oldest among the top sellers, it maintains widespread use in controlling Asian rust in soybean crops, often combined with modern products to enhance their effectiveness against evolving disease resistance. The market has attracted Chinese and Indian companies, which are establishing a presence through distribution systems and registration holdings, finding these approaches more profitable than solely supplying products to local distributors.
