Argentina Lime Market Analysis

The Argentina Lime Market size in terms of Equal-2.30 is expected to grow from USD 1.73 billion in 2025 to USD 1.93 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 2.30% during the forecast period (2025-2030).

In Argentina, lemons and limes dominate citrus production, making up over half of the nation's total citrus yield. Notably, Argentina stands as one of the world's top lime producers. While a significant portion of the country's lemons is earmarked for processing, Argentina's favorable growing conditions and ample land bolster its lime and lemon production. Consistently ranked among the globe's top five lemon producers, Argentina has seen annual lemon yields hover between 1.5 to 2 million metric tons. The country’s lemon production represents a significant share of the global supply, with a large proportion of its output dedicated to export. Besides, Argentina is a major exporter of lemons, particularly to markets in Europe, North America, and Asia. The EU, Russia, and the United States are the primary destinations for Argentine lemon exports. In 2023, Argentina was the second-largest exporter of lemons in the world, after Mexico.

Production of lemons and limes is concentrated mainly in Tucuman, Salta, and Jujuy, with some lesser activity in northeastern Argentina. Recently, the planted area for lemon and lime cultivation in northwest Argentina has seen notable expansion. Through tree removal and replanting, growers have enhanced the plant-per-hectare ratio, leading to better production efficiency and yields. This uptick in planted areas is poised to propel market growth in the coming years.

Argentina is capitalizing on a surging global appetite for lemons, especially in Europe, where lemons play a pivotal role in cooking, beverages, and as flavor enhancers. Furthermore, the rising demand for lemon-derived products, like lemon juice, is a significant growth driver for the industry. Argentine lemon producers enjoy a cost advantage over other major producers, bolstering their competitiveness in the global arena.

Argentina Lime Market Trends

Increasing Demand Due to Health Benefits

Limes are high in vitamin C and antioxidants both of which may offer health benefits. Eating limes or drinking the juice improves immunity, reduces heart disease risk factors, prevents kidney stones, aids iron absorption, and promotes healthy skin. These benefits associated with lemon will boost the market during the forecast period.

Lime production in Argentina has increased due to the increasing demand over the past two years. For instance, according to FAOSTAT, the production volume of lime/lemon was observed at 1.15 million metric tons in 2020, which increased to 1.83 million metric tons in 2022. Thus, the increasing demand for lime/lemon is projected to drive the market during the forecast period.

Argentina dominates the production of lemon oil. Argentina and Spain dominate world production, with approximately 70% of global output. Lemon oil is used in a wide range of products and industries, including flavor, fragrance, aromatherapy, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, and animal feeds. Also, dehydrated peel of lime/lemon is used to obtain pectin which serves as a thickener and natural stabilizer in the food and pharmaceuticals industry. Consumption of lime in Argentina has been improving positively, with little fluctuation over the years. Consumption demand is predominantly satisfied by the regional production and supply, with low imports.

High Export From the Country

Argentina is a major supplier of fresh lemons and lemon-based products, such as juice concentrate and lemon essential oils, to European and North American markets. Lemons are widely used in food and beverage production, cooking, and as an ingredient in various products. The growing consumption of lemon-based products, including fresh fruit and juice, drives demand for Argentine exports.

Argentina is a net citrus-producing and exporting country. The fresh lemon export business continues to be profitable. According to the ITC Trade Map, in the year 2019, the export of lemon from Argentina was observed at 231,697 metric tons, which increased by 251,386 metric tons in 2022. The United States and European countries such as Russia, Netherlands, and Spain were the leading importers of lime from Argentina with 23%, 17.7%, 14.7%, and 12.4% of Argentina's exports in the year 2022.

However, Argentina's 2022 lemon campaign was heavily affected by a combination of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, higher sea freight rates, a global oversupply of lemons, and a post-pandemic macroeconomic environment affecting consumption and costs in all markets and production areas. However, the country exported lime/lemon to cater to the high demand. Thus, the demand for high exports to meet the growing consumption of lime is going to drive the market during the forecast year.
