China Lime Market Analysis

The China Lime Market size is estimated at USD 2.60 billion in 2025, and is expected to reach USD 2.80 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 1.5% during the forecast period (2025-2030).

China’s lime market is experiencing steady growth, driven by increasing domestic and international demand. The country’s main lime-producing provinces are Sichuan and Yunnan, with Anyue County in Sichuan being the largest lime-growing region, followed by Dehong in Yunnan and Tongnan in Chongqing. The key lime and lemon varieties cultivated in China include Eureka lemons, Xiangshui lemons, Taiwan limes, and Beijing lemons.

According to FAOSTAT data, China’s lime production reached 2.4 million metric tons in 2023, which is increase of 6.6 thousand metric tons from the previous year. The overall lime production is projected to continue rising, supported by favorable weather conditions, reduced impact of citrus greening, and improved yields in younger orchards, particularly in western China. The yield increased to 23,583.9 kg/ha in 2023, up from 23,389.9 kg/ha in 2022.

This growth in production is providing ample raw materials for the lime processing industry, fueling its rapid expansion. Additionally, China’s social and economic progress, along with rising living standards, is driving significant transformations in the lime market, reinforcing its long-term growth potential.

China Lime Market Trends

Rising Demand is Driving the Production of Lime

Lime is a crucial raw material for various industries, including food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and essential oils. Pickle and juice manufacturers consistently source limes from producers, while the cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors rely on lime extracts for product formulations. As demand from these industries continues to rise, lime production in China has been increasing to keep pace.

According to FAOSTAT, China’s lime production grew from 2,404 thousand metric tons in 2022 to 2,414 thousand metric tons in 2023. The distinct flavor of lime, different from that of lemons, has made it a highly sought-after citrus fruit, particularly among Chinese beverage companies that use it in drinks, food products, and confectionery.

Additionally, lime rind contains limonene, a key essential oil widely used in the cosmetics and oil industries. Chinese cosmetic manufacturers extensively incorporate lime-based ingredients in their product lines, further driving demand. This growing industrial reliance on lime is significantly contributing to the steady increase in its production across the country.

China’s Lime Export Market is Expanding Rapidly due to Strong International Demand.

China's lime exports are increasing due to growing international demand. The country produces a significant quantity of limes, enabling it to meet both domestic and export needs. The combination of advanced agricultural practices, favorable climate conditions, and extensive cultivation areas has strengthened China's position as a major lime producer. As global demand for citrus fruits continues to rise, China has been exporting a substantial volume of limes to key markets.

According to the ITC trademark, the Philippines (USD 19.3 million), Hong Kong (USD 10.4 million), and Indonesia (USD 10.1 million) were major importers of Chinese limes in 2023. The overall export of lime reached USD 62.7 million in 2023, up from USD 56.7 million in 2022. This growth reflects the increasing acceptance of Chinese limes in international markets and the country's ability to maintain consistent quality standards in its exports.

China's lime production and exports are anticipated to grow. Favorable weather conditions, reduced impact of citrus greening, and improved yields from younger orchards, particularly in western China, are driving this upward trend. The implementation of modern farming techniques, efficient supply chain management, and quality control measures has enhanced the productivity of lime orchards. These factors position China as a key player in the global lime export market, with potential for further expansion into new international markets.
